The message is vague, but the cause is usually one of a short list of things.
Causes
- Heavy server load on OpenAI's side (peak hours).
- Corrupted browser cache or cookies.
- A browser extension conflicting with the site.
- A network or DNS issue.
The Fix
- Hard refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R to bypass cache).
- Clear cache and cookies for chat.openai.com.
- Try an incognito window with no extensions enabled.
- Check status.openai.com to confirm the service is actually up.
- Log out and log back in.
- Switch networks, or change your DNS to 8.8.8.8.
If it's an outage on OpenAI's end, there's nothing to do but wait it out.
