The Problem
You type a completely normal image prompt in Midjourney, and it gets rejected with:
This prompt may violate guidelines
Even when the description seems totally harmless to you.
The Cause
Midjourney uses an automated word filter that blocks any prompt containing a word from its restricted list — even if that word is used in a completely innocent context. It can also flag certain public figures or ambiguous terms.
The Fix
- Re-read your prompt for any word that could be misread as violent, sexual, or otherwise sensitive.
- Swap the flagged word for a synonym (e.g. "shooting star" can trigger it — try "falling star" instead).
- Remove real people's names or copyrighted character names.
- Simplify the prompt into shorter, clearer phrases.
- Check the official guidelines at docs.midjourney.com before retrying.
- If you believe the block is a false positive, reach out via the official Midjourney Discord support.
