The Problem
In the middle of a long chat with Claude, you suddenly see:
This conversation has reached its maximum length. Please start a new conversation to continue chatting with Claude.
The Cause
Every AI model has a limit called the "context window" — the amount of text it can hold in a single conversation. Once the conversation (your messages + replies + files) hits that limit, it can't continue in the same thread.
The Fix
- Start a new chat.
- Before the old one closes, ask Claude to write a full summary of everything discussed so far.
- Paste that summary at the start of the new chat so it can pick up where you left off.
- If you're working on a large project, use the Projects feature (if available on your plan) to keep files and context persistent instead of repeating them each time.
- Break large tasks into smaller conversations instead of one very long thread.
There's no way to "reopen" the same conversation past its limit — but a good summary saves you most of the lost time.
